NEURALGIA

In plain English: neuralgia is when a nerve, any nerve in your body, or a group of nerves, become a drama queen. The nerve tissue may not be “injured” in the normal muscle sprain way, but the nerve is irritated enough to scream anyway.

Neuralgia actually means nerve pain.

More specifically, neuralgia is sharp, burning, stabbing, shocking, or electric-like pain that follows the path of a nerve. It usually happens because a nerve is irritated, inflamed, compressed, damaged, or sending faulty pain signals.

Neuralgia can occur in any area supplied by nerves - virtually anywhere. An example is Trigeminal Neuralgia which affects a section of nerves on the face.

what can cause Neuralgia?

Neuralgia can be caused by several things: nerve compression, inflammation, trauma, shingles, diabetes, disc problems, spinal degeneration, poor posture, repetitive stress, or nerve sensitivity after injury.

Cleveland Clinic explains that neuropathic nerve pain can happen when the nervous system is damaged or not functioning properly.

From a chiropractic standpoint, the big question is not just, “What hurts?”

The better question is: Why is this nerve irritated?

Sometimes the nerve is being squeezed. Sometimes it is being stretched. Sometimes the joints around it are not moving well. Sometimes the muscles are guarding. Sometimes the body has adapted to poor movement for so long that the nerve is living in a bad neighborhood and finally started filing complaints.

At AFC AZ we offer our own ALPHA 5 PHASE SYSTEM.

In the Realign phase, we look at the mechanics: How is the spine moving? How are the hips, pelvis, ribs, neck, or shoulders contributing? The goal is to restore better motion and reduce stress on the irritated nerve pathway all the way up and down the nerve pathway.

Most neuralgia is not automatically an emergency, but it should be respected.

Nerve pain is your body’s smoke alarm. Sometimes it is just toast burning. Sometimes the kitchen is on fire.

You should seek urgent medical care if nerve pain comes with sudden weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness in the groin or saddle area, facial drooping, trouble speaking, chest pain, unexplained fever, cancer history, recent major trauma, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Some types of neuralgia, like trigeminal neuralgia or post-herpetic neuralgia after shingles, may need medical management.

Mayo Clinic notes that trigeminal neuralgia can cause electric-shock-like facial pain and may be triggered by light touch, brushing teeth, or applying makeup.

Chiropractic care has a lane, and medicine has a lane. The smart move is knowing which road you are on before flooring the gas pedal.

At AFC AZ, during the first visit, we are asking:

Is this appropriate for conservative care, or does this need imaging, referral, medication, or urgent evaluation?

Good care starts with good judgment. Chiropractic care for neuralgia often involves spinal adjustments to alleviate pressure on nerves and restore proper nerve function.

Chiropractors may use a variety of adjusting techniques in addition to techniques like soft tissue therapy, acupuncture, or electrical stimulation to reduce inflammation and relieve the pain associated with neuralgia.

Additionally, lifestyle modifications, such as stress management techniques and ergonomic adjustments, may be recommended to help prevent neuralgia flare-ups and promote overall nerve health.

Can chiropractic care help neuralgia?

Depends on the cause.

If the nerve irritation is related to spinal motion, posture, joint restriction, disc stress, muscle guarding, or movement dysfunction, chiropractic care may help reduce mechanical irritation and improve how the body moves. That may include adjustments, soft tissue work, mobility drills, rehab exercises, posture correction, nerve-friendly movement strategies, and home care.

Neuralgia is not one-size-fits-all. If the pain is coming from shingles, diabetes, MS, tumor, severe nerve compression, or another medical condition, the plan may need to involve medical care too.

The goal is to improve the environment around the nerve so the body has a better chance to calm down and function. In the case of neuralgia, oftentimes a co-management approach is the best one: medical intervention to relieve the intense pain while chiropractic maximizes your nervous system function and therefore your healing capabilities.

Our ALPHA 5 PHASE SYSTEM is designed to

Relieve: calm your irritated nerve(s) and nervous system,

Realign: restore your spinal and joint motion,

Rebuild: strengthen the muscles that support your problematic areas,

Retrain: teach your body to better movement patterns,

Reclaim: get the patient back to living, working, sleeping, exercising, and trusting their body again.
